The drama unfolds

Jennifer remembered the way her mother had told her stories of her father and how they met. Sara Siddle had been hired by the Grissoms to take care of Dee who had been very sickly as a young child. Her relationship with Gil developed as Mrs Grissom had been kept busy by her 2 other children and didn't have any time for her husband. The many late night hours they spent together in Dee's nursery grew and soon they were in love. With Sara's tender loving care and attention, Dee grew stronger and healthier. Jennifer had always looked upon Dee as the source of all her unhappiness. Her mother would never have had fallen for her father had it not been for her and he would never have abandoned them if he hadn't been afraid of losing Dee and her siblings. Jennifer was angry and vengeful against the entire Grissom family but she held the most hatred for Dee. And now in their adulthood, she was still ruining Jen's life. I will make her pay, thot Jen with a sneer.

Mike: Hi Jen...what's wrong?

Jen: Michael! You really shouldn't sneak up on people like that you know.

Mike: Sorry but you seemed far away just now. WHat's wrong? Did someone step on your toes today?

Jen: Michael, someone is stepping on my toes everyday. Did you help me get what I asked for?

Michael: Sure..these are the financial records of the Victorian for the last 2 years. Now will you please tell me why you wanted them? And why didn't you get them yourself? You're a major shareholder, you could have easily gotten them.

Jen: (takes them from Mike and flips thru) I didn't want people to know that I was looking thru them.

Mike: And I'm a better candidate to be snooping around the finance dept?

Jen: At least you're family...they trust you. Nobody here trusts me. They'll ask too many questions.

Mike: (puts hand on her shoulder) Jen...you ARE family. You're my sister..you have to remember that. Everyone else will come around soon enough. They'll see that you really don't mean harm...

Jen gives a sarcastic laugh and continues to look thru the financial records. Mike soon realised how absorbed she is and left her alone in her office. She too will come around soon, he thot, and realise that we're all family and we should learn to accept that.
Back in her office, Jen scrutinised the records closely trying to look for anything that could help her ruin the Victorian financially. She had looking for any loopholes and any vulnerabilities that the hotel line may have but she had been unsuccessful so far. No matter, she will just look harder. Suddenly, she heard laughter ring out just outside her office door that been left open by Mike. She saw Dee with Steven and Paris' secretary, Sandra talking and laughing away as they walked by. Jen frowned at the scene and her ire towards Dee was renewed. If she wasn't happy, no one should..especially not Dee. Maybe her meeting with Jonny later in the day would finally give her some good news.

But the meeting had proven to be nothing but a major disappointment to her. Jon had let her down by giving away half his shares to the two ditzy girls he claims to be capable. She had declined the invitation to join the Grissoms and the Owens in their celebration. Hmph, she thot bitterly, she had no reason to celebrate. More than anything, she was angrier and more vengeful towards the Grissoms now, esp Dee.
As she now waited in the board room for Dee to join her, she smiled wickedly to herself, patting the knife she had stowed in her bag.

Dee was waiting at the lifts when Mike saw her in the distance and called out to her.

Mike: Hi Dee...where're you going?

Dee: Hi Mikey...I'm meeting Jennifer at the board room. She said she wanted to talk to me about some work stuff. What's up? (grins)

Mike: Some work stuff huh? Can i come? (Dee looks at him in surprise) Come on, humour me. I want to talk to Jenny too. I promise to leave the moment you start on your work stuff...scouts honour!

Dee: (laughs) Silly boy..of cos you can come. Let's go..she's already waiting for me there.

When they entered the room, Jen was standing by the large window, looking out. She didn't turn when they called her but gestured for them to sit down. Feeling rather nervous and sensing the very tense mood, both Dee and Mike sat down at the large sofa that filled up a corner of the room. Jen finally left the window and sat down near Dee, her face unreadable.

Dee: So Jen..er...what work issues did you want to talk to me about? Is it about the upcoming Stevens' wedding? I already..

Jen: Why does everything have to be work with you? Can't we just have a chat? I mean, Michael here keeps telling me about how we are all one big family and we should start acting like one.

Mike: Oh yes...good..good..this is great. I totally support this. I'm so proud of you Jen..I knew you had a big heart behind that tough exterior.

Dee: Oh. (surprised by her sudden change of tone)..er..ok. So what do you want to..er..chat about?

Jen: (leans back into her armchair) Oh I dunno...let's start with our childhood. I mean, what was it like? (gives a wide fake smile)

Dee: (warming up) Oh..my childhood? I guess it was ok. I didn't have that many friends but the few I had were very precious. But the one person I miss the most from my very early childhood was Mama. You remember her right, Mike? (Mike nods enthusiastically)

Jen: (sharply) Who was Mama? Why'd you call her that?

Mike: She was Dee's nursemaid. But only Dee calls her that. The rest of us just called her Sarah. Took care of Dee til she was..er..

Dee: Ten. Our mother was too busy with the 2 of them to take care of me cos I was sick all the time. So Mama took care of me and that's why I called her that. She was like my second mother...I could always count on her when I was sick or sad or when someone from school bullied me. She would always be waiting for me at home. sigh..I dunno why she disappeared suddenly just before my tenth birthday.

Mike: Oh yeah...you were so sad you actually refused to come down for your party. (turns to Jen) She wouldn't come out of her room for a month and cried every night. Our dad had to comfort her. (teasingly to Dee) You big baby...

Dee: (slaps Mike's arm playfully) Shut up! You were the bully..(laughs) So Jenny..what about your childhood..erm..what was it like..

Jen: (face suddenly black) I had a lonely childhood. I remember my mother didn't have much time to spend with me when I was really young but when she did make time for me, the three of us would have such a great time. My father would take me and mum out for very long car rides and we would have picnics at the end of it. (suddenly smiles at memory) I had my best times then. My father was such a great dad...I used to shout to the world that he was the greatest dad in the whole world.

Mike: You really had some good times with him huh? See, you really should remember those times and we can all start over.

Jen: I did have good times with him but when he died or pretended to have, (face becomes tense) my mother fell into depression and would lock herself up in her room for days at a time. My grandma had to come take care of us but she died when I was 16 and my mum was still very much a broken woman. She couldn't bring herself to accept that my father had died and she told me on her deathbed that she was also broken-hearted by the fact that my father's wife had sacked her the day he died and refused to let her see Dee anymore. (turns to Dee, looking angry and betrayed) You...my mother sacrificed time that she should have been spending with me to take care of you.

Dee: (confused) What? What are you talking about? You mother...?

Jen: (pointing at Dee) Yes you! I was left alone so she could be with you and my father. I was left alone when she was too busy being depressed cos she lost you and my father. It was all you! She sacrificed me for you! (slowly stands up) Do you realise how much you have hurt me?

Mike: (standing up) Wait wait..hold on a minute here...this is all very confusing...

Dee: (stands up) You're telling me that your mother was Mama?

Jen: Stop calling her that! You have no right calling her Mama! She was never your mother! She was mine! Mine! But you took her away from me! You took my father away from me...you've been ruining my life from the time you were born! I hate you!

Dee: (shocked) I never took anyone away from you! This is all just a big messy mistake...I never knew she was...

Jen: Stop playing the innocent here. You have been taking what's rightfully mine all these years. (reaches into her bag and flashes knife and points it at Dee) Why do you have to take everything away from! (turning hysterical) Why?!

Mike: (quickly stands between Jen and Dee) Now Jenny...let's talk calmly about this ok...put the knife down...we don't want anyone to get hurt now do we?

Jen: Of cos I do! I want to kill her! Then maybe she'll stop ruining my life!

Dee: What are you talking about? All that's in the past...it happened so long ago! How can you still blame me? How can I be ruining your life now? This doesn't make sense!

Jen: (still pointing knife at Dee and Mike) What about this afternon huh? When Jon arranged the shares transfer. We were on the same side..Jon and me...and you had to take him away from me. He was my only friend and you charmed him to your side like you do every one else. You slut!

Dee: Jon gave those shares to us willingly. He never wanted to hurt us like you do. All he wanted was for us to be reunited...that's all.

Jen: You took away my father, my mother, my friend, my hotel and now..my one love. You took them all away from me! I won't let you ruin me anymore...I won't! (Mike tries to take her knife away but misses) Get away Mike! Leave us alone!

Mike: Come now Jen..Jenny...put the knife down. Pls?

Dee: What are you talking about? Who is your one love? I have no idea who you're talking about.

Jen: Oh just shut up with the innocent girl routine. You knew I liked him and you took him away from me. He should have been mine but you! You had to steal his heart too! I hate you! (menacingly slashes air with knife)You stole Nick away from me..and now I shall steal you away from him forever! (laughs evilly)

Dee: (totally shocked) Nick? I stole Nick away from you? Now you really have lost it. Nick and I are nothing but..

Jen: I've seen how he looks at you. i know these things cos I looked at him the same way too. He is in love with you. You're just too stupid to realise it. And now that you know..it's too late! (Jen suddenly lunges forward)

Paris had been walking past the board room when she heard the commotion. She looked around the corridor but there was nobody around. She then peered thru the room door that had been left ajar by Dee earlier. She was shocked to see Jen brandishing a knife and Mike standing in front of Dee. Jennifer looked hysterical and wild, slashing the air with the knife.

Paris was rooted to the spot, paralysed by fear. She heard Jen ranting and raving about her hatred for Dee while Mike shielded the latter from the knife. He tried many times to grab for the knife but Jen was too fast for him. Suddenly, Paris saw Jen lunge forward with the knife and screamed in terror. Both Mike and Dee turned in surprise to see Paris standing at the doorway. Jen took the opportunity to slash at Mike who then fell to the ground, bleeding. She then rushed forward to attack Dee who tried to fight back. They struggled with the knife but Jen managed to stab Dee in the abdomen. Dee looked down at her injury in shock and looked at her bloodied hands before collapsing to the ground.

Paris: (coming out of her terror) Dee! What have you done, Jen! You've killed her!

Jen: (looking at Dee unconscious on the floor) Good riddance! (kicks Dee's limp body) Bitch! I hate you!

Paris rushed at Jen and managed to land a surprise blow to Jennifer's stomach which sent her reeling to the ground but she still held on to the deadly knife. With anger and hatred suddenly giving her new found strength and courage, Paris lunged at Jen and they struggled on the floor, both trying to gain control of the knife but in vain. By this time, Sandra had heard the commotion and was met by the bloody scene and Paris and Jen fighting when she rushed to the board room. She ran to get help, screaming bloody murder along the way. By the time the security guards and Marg and Gil had rushed there, they were met by 4 limp bodies on the ground.

Marg: (hysterical) Who did this? Oh dear God...my baby! Paris! (runs over to Paris)

Gil: (sees Dee and Mike bleeding on the ground and runs over to them) Someone call an ambulance! Dee! Mike! (sees Dee's wound bleeding profusely and tries to stop it) Who could have done this! (turns and sees Paris lying on top of Jen) Jennifer? What...? (suddenly Mike groans in pain) Mike? Mike! What happened?

Mike: (weakly) It...was....Jenn.i..fer...She wanted...to kill.....Dee..

Suddenly Paris starts to move and groan in pain. She turned over to reveal Jennifer with a knife wedged in her body, obviously dead. Marg was taken aback. Paris groaned again and slowly opened her eyes.

Paris: (vision a little blurred) Mum?..Is that you?..

Marg: (hugs Paris) Yes sweetheart! It's me! Are you hurt? You look hurt...there's blood on you..

Paris: (slowly sits up, rubbing her head) I..I don't think it's my blood. (turns to look at Jen and hugs Marg) It was so horrible Mum! (suddenly turns and looks around) Dee! Mike! She stabbed them! Are..are they ok?

Gil: I don't know...Dee is bleeding so badly...I..I don't...Where is the ambulance!?

The staff and guests of the Victorian were alarmed when they heard the wailings of an ambulance bus and saw 2 ride up to the hotel driveway. They watched in curiosity as the paramedics grabbed their equipment and ran to the lifts. Fran looked at Nick questioningly who then shrugged and shook his head, Nobody knew what had happened. Everyone was horrified when they saw Mike and Dee being wheeled out to the ambulance followed by a body bag 15 min later. Mike was conscious and groaning in pain as they loaded him into the bus but Dee looked lifeless and pale.
A very pale Paris followed soon after, covered in a blanket accompanied by her mother and a paramedic. They too got into the ambulance with Mike and soon both ambulances left the hotel, tyres screeching and sirens wailing. The staff and the few guests in the lobby looked around, confused and visibly upset at what had just transpired.

The aftermath

The police and detectives soon descended upon the hotel and began cordoning off the board room. They began taking down statements from everyone who had been linked to the crime and crime scene. Ralph and Nicole, who had been away at a meeting, rushed back and were shocked at what had happened. Ralph stayed behind to deal with the police and formulate a damage control plan for the hotel with the rest of his PR dept. Nicole took Gil to the hospital.
Paris had been checked over by the ER doctor and treated for her cuts and bruises. They sat in the hospital lounge waiting for news about Mike and Dee when two detectives came up to them.

Det F: Hi, I'm Detective Farelly and this is my partner Detective Benson. (they flash their badges) Could we talk to you about what happened at the hotel? (Paris looks upset but nods slowly) Ok then..(nods at Det Benson)

Det B: Mrs Owen...why don't we go get a cup of coffee? (Marg nods and slowly gets up)

Paris: (Det F. sits down in front of Paris) Do you know how Dee and Mike are? Nobody's telling us anything.

Det F: (looks at P sympathetically) I'm sorry, Paris...can I call you Paris? (P nods) I'm sorry Paris..the doctors are still working on them. But the moment I know something you'll be the first to know, ok?

Detective Farelly begins questioning her about what had happened, all of which Paris quietly answers..still pale and shocked about the whole incident. She couldn't believe that she killed someone. She stared down at her hands and saw them still shaking. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't get the trembling to stop. She clasped her hands together, stuffing them into her coat pocket and continued answering Det F's questions. Finally, her mother came back with his partner holding steaming cups of coffee. Det Farelly nodded his thanks for the coffee and stood up.

Det F: Thank you for your time, Paris, Mrs Owen. We will need you to come down to the station tomorrow to give an official statement. (Marg nods and wraps arm around P's shoulders protectively)

The two detectives then left, leaving Paris and Marg alone again in the lounge. Not long after, Gil and Nicole came into the lounge and immediately came over to them. Paris saw them and suddenly burst into tears as she hugged Nicole tightly. Gil and Marg embraced too, both needing the support of the other. Nicole held on to Paris tightly and she too began to cry. The doctor walked in on them and stood back for a moment to give them some time before clearing his throat. The group turned and rushed over to him.

Gil: Doctor, how are my children?

Doc: Michael sustained a deep slash across his chest but apart from that, he appears stable. We've sedated him and he's resting now.

Nicole: So he's going to be ok?

Doc: (nods) He received 15 stitches for the wound but apart from that, he was relatively unhurt. If all goes well, he'll be able to go home in a few days.

Marg: Oh thank goodness.

Gil: (still looking worried) What about Dee?

Doc: (hesitantly) Well..as for Deena, she received far more injuries than Michael some of which are rather serious. (the group held their breath) We are still working on her. As of now, all I can tell you is that she has a dislocated wrist and bruises. The most serious injury is of cos the stab wound to the abdomen. Mr Grissom, I will need your permission to operate on her if necessary.

Gil: Of..of cos...

Doc: Alright. Please come with me to sign the paperwork. This way pls. (they leave)

Paris: (collapses into nearby chair) It's all my fault. I should have gone in to stop them. (buries face in hands and cries) I was too scared..i..I'm so sorry Dee...It's all my fault.

Nicole: (sits down bside P and rubs her back) Come on paris..none of this is your fault. You saved them. Had it not been for you, Dee and Mike might both be dead by now. (hugs Paris) Thank you...

When Gil came back, his face was pale and he sat down wordlessly. They surrounded him, anxious to know what had happened.

Nic: Dad? What's wrong? Did something happen?

Gil: They took her up for surgery. Turns out the knife pierced a vital organ and they need to patch it up before she bleeds out internally. (The 3 of them gasp)

They waited for hours outside the operating theatre, looking up expectantly everytime the door opened. But it only revealed a nurse hurrying to get more equipment. The 4 of them were exhausted but none refused to give in to their fatigue. Paris was quiet and refused to talk to anyone else. She kept replaying the incident, thinking about she could have done to prevent it. Every scenario she replayed in her head made her feel even more miserable and guilty. She slumped into a corner by herself, refusing all offerings of food or drink.

Waiting

The entire Grissom clan was in the hospital, even Tobey took the day off school and headed straight to the hospital. Michael was allowed to wait outside the ER after getting 15 stitches for his gash. Thankfully it was only a superficial wound. But Dee's stab was deep. Jennifer had plunged the knife into Dee w all the hatred she could muster. And here Dee was, fighting for her life at the emergency room.
Ralph decided that Paris should be distracted, so he convinced her to go take the statement at the police station, rather than wait aimlessly outside the ER. Footsteps were heard running down the hospital hallway, and Nick turned the corner. He ran up to Nicole's side.
Nick asks Nic (hehe): How is she?! Wat happened?
Nic tells Nick (haha): She's still in the ER. Apparently she lost a lot of blood. Her heart stopped for a minute on the ambulance on the way here.
Nick: Her heart stopped??!! Oh gosh?! (fell against the wall, leaning heavily on it for support) Wat on earth happened?
Nic: She was attacked by Jennifer.
Nick: jen...Jennifer? (realising) Oh shoots....it's all my fault....she knows....
Nic: Knows wat?
Nick: Jenny knows I...Dee....argh....(squats down n buries face in hands)
They just waited there in solemn silence. Tobey stole a look at his father, who looked like he aged overnight, looking so defeated and helpless. He has never seen his dad so lost before. Gil was always a man w drive and clarity of vision, but now he looks as helpless as a newborn babe. Tobey felt all his anger for his father melt away in this instance. He has paid enough for his sins. His own flesh and blood attempted to kill another of his flesh and blood. Wat parent could stand the trauma of that? Tobey reached out and took his father's hand. Gil looked at him, and managed a weak smile.
Toeby: She'll be alright dad. Dee's a fighter.
Gil: Yeah...
But no one could console a father who almost lost 3 of his kids in a day. How do you console a father who lost a daughter, whom he had given up on years ago, and is desperately seeking to alleviate his guilt?
The Owen family came by a few minutes later. Paris couldn't look Gil in the eyes, feeling awful that she killed his daughter. it may have been accidental, but she did kill someone he loves. Marg and Ralph had their arms around Paris in the middle. She had folded her arms across her chest protectively. Mike looked up at her, at his angel, who saved his and his sister's life. Paris was staring at the floor. Nicole gave David a hug, then came to Paris.
Nic: It's ok. You saved their lives.
P; (tearing) I'm sorry....
Nic: There's nothing to be sorry for. Jenny tried to kill them, you had to save them....(To David) Wat did the police say?
Dav: They saw the tape to the whole incident. There'll be no legal action taken against Paris.
P: I feel so awful....
Marg: It's ok sweetheart. You did wat you could in that instant.
Paris looked at Gil, wishing he could say it's ok to her, because she knew Jenny was loved by him. She knew it hurt him the most right now. But she couldn't possibly ask him to grant her selfish desires, not when he has a daughter fighting for her life inside the ER.
The doctor came out 10 minutes later, asking for blood. Nick, Tobey and Gil volunteered.

Finally, hours after she was admitted, Dee was released to the ICU. There was nothing more the doctors could do except to wait for her to respond to the blood transfusion and the medication. She was utterly weak having lost a lot of blood, and was told that she has to remain in the hospital for more than a week to undergo observation for the effects of her heart-stopping (literally) moment in the ambulance.
Dee woke up for a short while, her head still groggy from the medication. She opened her eyes and saw Nick in front of her. For that moment, Dee felt so safe, so safe. Nick was by her side, and she needs no one else. He smiled, but Dee could see his tears. She couldn't talk w the respirator in her mouth, so she moved her fingers. Nick reached out to hold her hand. She gave a tiny little squeeze and Nick half-sobbed, half-laughed.
Nick: Hey you...you scared the hell out of me. (she squeezed his hand again) I'm so sorry. (her eyes fluttered, trying to keep open, but she felt so tired, so tired.) Go to sleep....I'll be here when you wake up....(Dee smiled) You're not running from me again, you've got my blood running thru you now. (Dee smiled and close her eyes)
Nick looked at Dee slip away into unconsciousness, his heart gripped w fear that she might just slip away like this, without a word. Her life still hung on the balance. It was all a matter of waiting, for her to hang on and get well.

Paris and her family were heading back to the hotel. They were at the lobby waiting for their lift when Michael came running out.
Mike: Paris! (she turned. He went up to her and hugged her.) Thank you. You saved Dee and my life. (still hugging her) i can't do without you by my side.
Paris: (shrugging out of his hold) Mike...don't.
The man Paris wanted to see right now was not Mike. The man she longed to hold her was not Mike.
Mike; Paris, we'll talk abt this later....promise me you'll think abt it.
P: Mike, it's more than I can think right now. I'm with someone else now. Don't waste your time.
And as if on cue, a cab drove up to the hospital foyer, and Jay hurried out of the cab, andin his haste, stumbled a little.
Jay: Paris!
Paris: (heart soaring) Jay!
He ran to hug her.
Jay: I went back to the hotel and they told me you were here....I was frantic....wat happened?
Ralph: (touching his sister's back) Come on, let's go. We'll talk in the car. (he saw the reporters clamouring to reach them. He hurried them into the waiting limo, and michael watched thru narrowed eyes as Paris ride off w Jay in the car. )

Dee Wakes up

Dee felt someone squeezing her hand, and her eyes struggled to open. She heard her name being called, and she tried harder. Finally, her eyes opened, heavy w sleep. The pirecing galre startled her, but as she got used to the light, she beganto make out Paris smiling at her, w Nicole by her side.
P: Hello you. Wakey wakey.
D: (the respirator were taken away) Hey....
P: How do you feel?
D: sleepy still. How long was I out?
P: 2 days now.
D: Wow...you were here all along?
P: Nope. not as long as someone...(grins at nicole)
D: Dad?
Nic: No Dee, Dad wasn't feeling very well. And he has....been busy arranging for....Jenny's funeral.
D: Oh gosh....(squeezes Paris' hand)
P: Well....Someone has been taking leave and staying by your side day and night.
D: WEll, that person ain't here now...
P: We told him to take a break. He looks tired....
D: Who?
P: You'll know.
nic: (looking out) We should go. Let's leave the two love birds alone.
P: Yeah....take care....and be nice. (squeezes her hand once more n left)

Nick was trying to open the door, balancing a cup of cofffee in one hand, and a packet of chips in another when Nicole opened the door for him.
Nic to Nick: Hey, she's awake.
Nick: Oh, really? Cool.
P: Take your time Nick. She's ALL yours.
Nick blushed as he went in. She turned and smiled at him, surprised that the girls were talking abt Nick. Taking in his unshaven, grungy look, Dee thought he looked very manly.
D: Hello.
Nick: You're awake!
D: Yup, at last....felt like I slept for centuries....
Nick: Yup, you've been a sleeping beauty for 2 days now.
D: I heard you have been here all the way.
Nick: Yeah....There are just some things I want to say when you wake up. About....About Jenny.
Dee: Wat abt her?
Nick: Dee....Jenny....I feel kinda responsible for wat Jenny did to you.
D: Wat has this got to do with you?
Nick: WEll I....I think I was one of the reasons why Jenny went berserk.
D: Hmm....she did say something that made me wonder....
Nick: She did? Wat did she say?
D: Something along the lines that I stole her love. Wat does she mean, Nick, do you know?
Nick: Yeah....(taking her hand) Jenny was in love with me.
D: Oh....but....wat makes her think...? I don't understand.
Nick: (wanting to tell her, but lacked courage) WEll...someday you will.
Dee: Someday....(looking at Nick) Is there something you want to tell me Nick?
Nick: Well, I....Dee Grissom....
Dee: Hmm, Nick?
Suddenly the nurse came in.
Nurse: Ahh! You! Why didn't you tell me that the patient is up? We have to call the doctor to do a checkup on her! Now, out you go! The doctor is coming in any second now to do a checkup, so please leave the ward, please.
Nick: but I... (looks helplessly at Dee)
Nurse: Out out! Dr Reeves is coming in now. You can talk later.
Nick: (disappointed) Alright. See you later, Dee.

Love troubles

When Dr Reeves came in, Dee sucked in a breath of admiration. He was tall with handsome dark looks. And his manner was very easygoing and charming. Dee couldn't help but stare at him.

Doc: Hi there (smiled widely which just melted Dee's heart) ...glad to see you awake. I'm Dr Reeves. Let me just check and see how you're doing ok? (Dee nods, speechless) Was that your husband that just left?

Dee: (confused) My husband? Who...Nick? Why would you say that?

Doc: Cos he's been here for the past 2 days. Everytime I came in to check on you he would be right there sitting on that chair, holding your hand. (smiles) He's very loving.

Dee: Oh..yes well..he's not my husband. I'm not married.

Nick reluctantly left the ward and walked out to the garden to sip his coffee. He had spent the last 2 days staying by Dee praying for her to wake up and be fine. He had also been thinking of how to tell her about how he felt. They had been very close, going out and spending time together. She was fun to be with even though everyone considers her a workaholic and a bit of a party pooper. If only the rest could see her away from the hotel and the pubs and clubs. When he found out from Sandra what had happened, he had rushed to the hospital. He knew Jenny had had been in love with him and perhaps his rejection of her had fuelled her anger. He felt somewhat guilty that Jen's anger had been taken out on Dee and Mike. He had gone to see Mike who looked fine. He heard that Mike would be discharged the next day.
Nick continued sipping his coffee, somewhat lost in thought when he saw a familiar figure in the distance. He looked at the figure in surprise.

Nick: (to himself) Joey? How odd that he should come alone instead of with the rest of the kitchen staff. (stood up to follow him)

Joey had not seen Nick and walked on towards Dee's room. He waa holding a bouquet of flowers and a large red balloon. Nick didn't know why he was even following Joey to Dee's room but he felt an overwhelming urge to find out what Joey was doing there by himself.Joey left the door open when he walked in and Nick could hear everything they said thru the open door although he remain obscured from view.

Joey: Hey there, my hummingbird...

Dee: (looking up in surprise) Joey! What are you doing here? (Joey comes over and kisses her) You came alone?

Joey: Uh huh...I heard about what happened. Oh man, what a mess! How are you?

Dee: Sore...very very sore. I can't even sit up. And I feel tired...

Joey: Don't worry, hummingbird. I won't be here long. I just came by before the others..just to say..you know..I missed you and I'm really glad you're ok. Here...flowers and balloon for you.

Dee: (smiling) Thanks Joey...I love the balloon. (Joey kisses her again) You're leaving already?

Joey: Yeah...my shift starts soon. You know how Jer gets cranky if I'm late. He is such an analist. (laughs at his own lame joke)

Dee: (smiles widely as she can't laugh) Joey...that is so lame. Thanks for coming. (Joey waves and leaves)

Nick hears Joey coming out and remains out of sight, watching Joey whistling away out to the lifts. Nick had heard everything. From the way they were talking, it seems as though they were insome sort of a relationship. Funny that Dee had never mentioned it to him before or at least it hadn't leaked out to the hotel grapevine. After seeing how affectionate Joey had been with Dee, Nick wondered if it would be a good idea for him to go in. He decided with a sigh to leave and let Dee rest.

Ever since the night of the incident, Jay had been very attentive of Paris' needs. She took the opportunity to properly introduce him to her family. Marg, who had known about Jay since Tuscany, was elated that her daughter had found someone. Grandpa Owen and Pierce had been away in Ireland when the incident happened. They rushed back as soon as they heard and were very glad that Paris and Mike were ok but were very worried about Dee. They tried to help Gil but there was only so much they can do. Gil had distanced himself from every one who loved him and kept himself shut in his room, refusing friends and family.

When Paris introduced Jay to the men in her family, she received mixed reactions. Both David and Ralph were happy for her although being the pragmatic brother he is, Ralph warned her about the pros and cons of dating a colleague. Her father being the easy going fellow that he is felt that as long as his princess was happy, he was happy and welcomed Jay with open arms.

However, Grandpa Owen developed an instant dislike to Jay. Although he would never admit it, Grandpa Owen was a bit of a snob. He had been brought up in a traditional upper class family that believed that his family should never marry below them.  He had been so happy when Paris and Mike had fallen for each other. He had always felt that Mike would make the perfect complement to both Paris and his family. He was an outstanding man who loved Paris dearly. He just didn't understand why Paris would break up with him and fall for, of all people, the hotel musician! He had always held a certain dislike for musicians, thinking that they would wind up poor and struggling to eke out a living playing instruments for entertainment. He had always thot that musicians were slackers and rebels against society and Jay was no exception. His quiet demeanour was probably a front he created to try and impress her family but it will take more to fool this old man, thot Grandpa Owen. He may be old but his mind was still as sharp as a razor.

Grandpa Owen was cold and unfriendly the entire evening when Paris had brought Jay around to have dinner with them. Paris noticed her grandfather's indifference towards Jay but brushed it off as her own paranoia at wanting her family to accept him. The family were laughing at an anecdote Kristin was telling them about Julian when Grandpa Owen cut into the conversation, addressing Jay.

GO: So Jay, tell me..how long have you been a musician?

Jay: Er..well..actually I've been playing music almost all my life. (GO looks at him questioningly) My parents encouraged me and my sister to pursue our interests and mine was music.

Marg: So other than singing and the piano, do you play anything else?

Paris: (excitedly) Oh yes! He's very very talented. He can also play the guitar, the saxophone, the drums..

Dave: The drums? (Jay nods shyly) Cool!

GO: So apart fromthis..music..you've never made any other plans? Any back up in case your music endeavours don't work out?

Jay: (nervously) Well...to be honest, no. Not really. Music has been my passion and my life.

GO: (curtly) I see. So you have no other ambitions or aspirations? Then how do you suppose you would go by when say...your music can no longer support you?

Jay: I...I...don't

Paris: (a little upset) Grandpa...why are you asking all these questions?

GO: My darling princess, I just want to be sure he can make you happy. Youknow how you've been nothing but our little princess since you were a little baby. I just want to be certain Jay can support you. And that he can live up to expectations.

Paris: (confused) Expectations? What are you talking about?

GO: Now now, dear...don't get upset. I'm just being practical here. Take Michael for example.

Paris: What does Michael have to do with any of this?

GO: With Mike, I can be sure that you'll be well taken care of. I mean he is after all rich and successful. No offence Jay but you are still just a lounge musician. Paris is an Owen...you must understand the implications that come with such a big name.

Jay: (clenching and unclenching his jaw in anger) Yes sir. I understand.

Marg: (trying to lighten up the mood) Well now, who's up for some dessert? I've specially ordered some lovely blueberry pie. Isn't that one of your favourite desserts, Dad? I've evenmade sure there's a side of ice cream.

GO: Yes of cos, Marg. That was very lovely of you.

After dinner, Jay excused himself and went to get his coat to leave, Paris came out to him.

Paris: Jay, please don'tget upset. My grandfather can be a bit of a snob sometimes. You know how his generation is.

Jay: I know Paris. I just need some time to myself tonight. I'll talk to you tomorrow,Paris. (kisses her) I love you. (smiles)

Paris: (smiles and a little relieved at his reaction) Thank you for being so understanding. Take care. (Jay waves and leaves)

It's Not Meant to be

Dee was discharged a week later, and Nick never got the chance to tell her how he feels again. She was constantly surrounded by family and friends. nick knew she was popular, but he never knew how popular until he witnessed the hordes of pple who turned up to see her, esp the number of guys. (ooh yeah) He felt insignificant as he watched her friends fuss over her. So wat if he turns up everyday to see her, she's usually busy with one friend or the other. Finally he stopped turning up altogether, figuring that she has company anyway. But Dee noticed the day he didn't turn up, and felt disappointed. She knew she hasn't had much time to spend with him lately, but she had no choice. Her friends came and she had to entertain them. She had hoped Nick would understand, but Nick, in his jealousy, failed to understand. Wat he thought was that he was too insignificant for her to pay him any notice. And that's how she let the misunderstanding go on.
Dee was returning to her room, walking really slowly along the hotel corridor when Nick saw her. He decided to go say hi. But as he approached her from behind, he saw Joey intercepting her. Nick hid behind the wall to watch, catching every word.
Joey: Hey you...
Dee: Joey! (looking around sneakily) Is it your break?
Joey: Oh yeah. I told Jerm that I'm taking 2 hours off. He owes me anyway. Are you sure you're up to it?
Dee: (sexily) Just be gentle with me.
Joey: C'mon. I can't wait. Let's get you into the room. (scoops her up in his arms as she squealed in surprise)
Dee: wah!!!
Joey: Ssshh....
Dee: JOey, you're gonna burst my stitches! (laughing away)
joey: Just hold your laughter and you'll be fine. Oh boy...wat did they feed you in the hospital? You weigh a ton.
Dee: (slapping his arm gently) You're just getting weaker. (rubbing his chest) It's getting flabby.
Joey: Oh yeah....been a tad lazy recently. Jerm's getting fat too....he spends too much time w his girlfriend.
Dee and Joey walked out of hearing range as Nick watched them head to her room, his heart aching. So those two really have some sort of relationship going on. Why didn't they let on abt it? Why keep it such a secret?
